Simplified in the Heian period from the man'yōgana kanji 保.

- The [ho] phoneme, typically in words of non-Japanese origin.
- The thirtieth character in the gojūon ordering of katakana. The previous character is ヘ and the next character is マ. The equivalent hiragana character is ほ.
