Simplified in the Heian period from the man'yōgana kanji 也.

- The [ya] phoneme, typically in words of non-Japanese origin.
- The thirty-sixth character in the gojūon ordering of katakana. The previous character is モ and the next character is ユ. The equivalent hiragana character is や.
