Simplified in the Heian period from the man'yōgana kanji 由.

- The [yu] phoneme, typically in words of non-Japanese origin.
- The thirty-seventh character in the gojūon ordering of katakana. The previous character is ヤ and the next character is ヨ. The equivalent hiragana character is ゆ.
