is a pictograph of a scorpion. When Buddhism came to China, the symbol was introduced. was given the same pronunciation as ; so, came to be used as a simplified form of . 万 is a scribal form of . The meaning ten thousand for 万 is a borrowing. Ten thousand is a big number, an endless number of knots on a long rope. This idea of a long rope representing ten thousand became identifed with the tail of the scorpion, which has many segments.
