萬 is a pictograph of a scorpion. When Buddhism came to China, the symbol 卍 was introduced. 卍 was given the same pronunciation as 萬; so, 卍 came to be used as a simplified form of 萬. 万 is a scribal form of 卍. The meaning ten thousand for 万 is a borrowing. Ten thousand is a big number, an endless number of knots on a long rope. This idea of a long rope representing ten thousand became identifed with the tail of the scorpion, which has many segments.
