Etymology[edit]

Attestable in ancient Chinese texts in its original verb form, "to study hard". The "mechanics" sense is wasei kango (和製漢語), orthographically borrowed from Japanese (りき)(がく) (rikigaku), [1] itself a calque of English mechanics, first attested in 《英軺日記》 by the Liu Xihong in 1876.
