From 唐山 Tang mountain + 人 person

  • The term 唐山 refers to the area that eventually came under the jurisdiction of the Tang Dynasty. 唐山人 refers to the people who come from that area.

Usage notes[edit]

an old-fashioned term that was primarily used to describe non-Hoklo people from Mainland China, a large number of whom had emmigrated to Taiwan after 1949. This term later came to be replaced by gōa-séng-lâng (外省人).
