Formed as an -i adjective from noun and adjectival noun 四角 (shikaku, square, rectangle).

  3. stilted, excessively formal, overly serious, as of speech
    あまり四角いことを言うな。
    あまりしかくいことをいうな。
    Amari shikakui koto o iu na.
    Don't talk so formally.

Usage notes [edit]

Slightly less formal, and generally reserved for spoken use. In more formal written contexts, the -na adjective form of 四角 is used instead.
