Compound of 外来 (gairai, foreign, coming in from outside) +‎ (go, language, word).[1]

外来語 (shinjitai kanji, kyūjitai kanji 外來語, hiragana がいらいご, historical hiragana ぐわいらいご, romaji gairaigo)

  1. a foreign loanword transliterated into Japanese, usually written in katakana
    「ググる」とは外来語 (がいらいご)だ。
    "guguru" to wa gairaigo da.
    "To google" is a foreign loanword.

Usage notes[edit]

Although this technically refers to a loanword from anywhere, it usually refers to loanwords from the West.
