Etymology[edit]
Compound of 大 (dai-, “big, large, greater”) + 東亜 (Tōa, “East Asia”) + 共栄 (kyōei, “thriving together, co-prosperity”) + 圏 (ken, “bounded area, sphere, region”).
A slogan promulgated during World War II by the Japanese government and military used as a means to rationalize rule over Asia.
