Etymology[edit]

Probably a Kra-Dai substrate. Compare Zhuang maq (to carry on the back), Mulao ma⁵ (to carry on the back), Maonan ʔma⁵ (to carry on the back). Cognate with Fuzhou Eastern Min (mâi, to carry on the back).
