幕僚 (traditional and simplified, Pinyin mùliáo)

1. (archaic) an assistant or an aide to a high ranking officer, who offered both accommodation and pay to the said aide in historic China.
2. a staff member of a company or government that plays a supporting role that does not directly generate income for the said organization (e.g. a technician from the IT department of a manufacturing business).
