平仮名 (hiragana ひらがな, romaji hiragana)
- A set of Japanese syllabary characters formed from cursive-style Chinese characters whose sounds approximate the Japanese sound being represented. Hiragana is mostly used for grammatical particles, verb-inflections, and Japanese words which are not written in kanji or which are too difficult for an educated person to read or write in kanji.
