Originally a compound of 祭り (matsuri, the 連用形 (ren'yōkei, stem or continuative form) of verb 祭る (matsuru), “to enshrine, worship) +‎ (koto, matter, thing).[1][2] The koto changes to goto as an instance of rendaku (連濁).
