Etymology[edit]
The two pronunciations are ultimately cognate, derived from a root meaning "to join, to come together ~ to meet, to gather ~ to match, to fit - to understand". Perhaps related to 合 ("to match") ~ 蓋/盖 ("lid").
Graphically: Ideogrammic compound (會意): 亼 + 曾 - a lid on top of an ancient double boiler.
