Etymology[edit]
ari + katashi > arigatashi. Compound of 有り (ari, “is, are”, in adverbial form) + 難し (katashi, “difficult”). The katashi changes to gatashi as an instance of rendaku (連濁).. The original meaning was "difficult to be".
