  1. A bitter red pill used, externally and internally, in traditional Chinese medicine "to remove heat, counteract toxicity, promote the subsidence of swelling and alleviate pain in the treatment of boils at the early stage, painful swollen gums or throat, ulcers in the mouth or on the tongue".
