Etymology[edit]

From Old Japanese, a compound of (mi, water) +‎ (na, alternative form of possessive particle (no)) +‎ (tsuki, month).[1][2] The tsuki changes to zuki as an instance of rendaku (連濁). Originally referred to the month in which rice paddies need more irrigation;[1][2] the use of (not; none; without) is in reference to this need for more water.
