Etymology[edit]
Possibly from a historical Kra-Dai language spoken in what was once the Kingdom of Wu, literally "good road", based on textual, grammatical, and phonetic evidences (Zhengzhang, 1990):
- 眙 (OC *lɯ) – "good": cf. Siba Mulam [Term?] (/ʔi˦˨/), Southern Kam [Term?] (/lai˥˥/), Qabiao [Term?] (/(lăŋ˥˥).ʔăj˥˥/); Thai ดี (dii), etc.;
- 盱 (OC *qʰʷa) – "road; path", < alternative transcription 緩 (OC *ɢʷaːnʔ): cf. Siba Mulam [Term?] (/kʰwən˦˨/) Southern Kam [Term?] (/kʰwən˧˥/), Qabiao [Term?] (/xɒn˥˥/); Thai หน (hǒn), Zhuang roen (/ɣon˨˦/), etc.
