Etymology[edit]

Originally /ki1ko2yu/. From lower bigrade 聞こゆ. [kikwoyu] → [kikoyu] → [kikoyeru] → [kikoeru]. The irrealis of 聞く (kiku, hear) kika + "[grammatical suffix]" in attributive form. Etymology reveals an earlier form: kikayu → kikoyu.
