Etymology [edit]
Literally: the flag (旗) of fanciness (花, as in 花哨). Now obsolete, superseded by 美国 (full name: 美利坚合众国). However still preserved in Vietnamese, where the exonym for USA is Hoa Kỳ (花旗).
