Etymology[edit]

Phono-semantic compound (形聲): semantic  + phonetic

Han character[edit]

Usage notes[edit]

and 著 are traditional variants of the same character (variant dictionary), and in simplified Chinese only 着 is used. However, in Japanese shinjitai, 着 and 著 are distinct characters, and in Big5 encoding 著 is encoded but 着 is not – the variants were standardized differently in Mainland simplified and Taiwanese traditional. In Hong Kong, 着 and 著 are distinct characters with different meaning. But it is sometimes influenced by Mainland and Taiwan.
