Glyph origin[edit]

Phono-semantic compound (形聲形声, OC *to) : semantic (insect) + phonetic (OC *tjo). Originally a pictogram (象形) of a spider. Later, was added to the pictograph to indicate sound. In small seal script, the character became written as the characters 𬹣 and .
