Alternative forms[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Old Japanese.

/kupu/ > /kuɸu/ > */kuwu/ > /kuu/

The medial /w/ vanishes because Japanese does not have a /wu/ phoneme. It surfaces though in the negative kuwanai.
