Small seal script | Transcribed ancient scripts |
Phono-semantic compound (形聲/形声, OC *suː) : semantic 馬 (“horse”) + phonetic 蚤 (OC *ʔsuːʔ). Sense “grieved, sad” is a phonetic loan.
Etymology 1[edit]
- to harass, to bother
- Schuessler, 2007 suggests it is a voiced variant of 搜 (sōu, “move”), p. 450.
- grieved, sad
- Of Austroasiatic origin. Schuessler, 2007 makes a connection to Old Khmer [script needed] (sook, “sorrow, affliction, grief, to be sad, to grieve”), p. 451. The loss of OC coda is attributed to the long vowel.
