Etymology[edit]
The left component of this character was originally 幵, and this was an ancient name for the Chinese pond heron. The jiān reading comes from the original left component. The left component has been substituted for 开 in both traditional and simplified Chinese. Mainland ornithologists have used this character in naming bitterns and certain other few species of heron, and have given it the reading yán.
