Etymology[edit]

First attested in the Worin seokbo (月印釋譜 / 월인석보), 1459, as Middle Korean 혀〮 (Yale: hyé). Also attested in the Myobeomnyeonhwagyeong eonhae (妙法蓮華經諺解 / 묘법연화경언해), 1463, as Middle Korean 셔〮 (Yale: syé).

First attested in the Bak Tongsa eonhae (朴通事諺解 / 박통사언해), 1677, as Early Modern Korean 혓가래 (Yale: hyeskalay). Also attested in the Mong'eo yuhae (蒙語類解 / 몽어유해), 1768, as Early Modern Korean 셧가래 (Yale: syeskalay).
