Korean[edit]

Etymology[edit]

First attested in the Bullyu dugongbu si eonhae (分類杜工部詩諺解 / 분류두공부시언해), 1481, as Middle Korean 파〮라ᄒᆞ다〮 (Yale: phálà-hòtá). Formed as a compound of the root *pA/E/Ur- ("blue-green") (e.g., 푸르— (pureu-, “to be blue or green”)) + 하— (ha-).

Pronunciation[edit]

  • (SK Standard/Seoul) IPA(key): [ˈpʰa̠(ː)ɾa̠tʰa̠]
  • Phonetic hangul: [(ː)]
    • Though still prescribed in Standard Korean, most speakers in both Koreas no longer distinguish vowel length.
