[edit] Etymology

EB1911 - Volume 01 - Page 001 - 1.svg This entry lacks etymological information. If you are familiar with the origin of this word, please add it to the page as described here.

This term is likely to come from the ancient pronunciation of "香菇" (Fragnant Mushroom) in Chinese. For example, in the Min Nan (閩南) dialect, which is one of the five major dialects in China and is known to contain many linguistic features of Archaic Chinese language, "香菇" is pronunced as "Hyogo", which is quite close to Korean prnounciation except for a shift in the begining consonant. In fact, for a large number of Chinese loanwords in Korean vocabulary, the Korean pronunciation is quite close to the pronunciation of the same words in the Min Nan dialect. Such a phonetic similarity reflects the fact that the Min Nan dialect group used to live in northern China during ancient times, before they migrated southwards into their current locations in Fujian and Taiwan.
