Etymology [edit]

From Proto-Indo-European *bʰágo-. The original root *bʰag- appears to have referred to "eating, food, wealth", hence the provider of food and wealth, i.e. "god". Cognate with Sanskrit adjective often applied to gods भग (bhága, dispenser, gracious lord, patron). Compare Proto-Slavic *bogъ (god).
