Turkish[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Old Turkic öl-, from Proto-Turkic *öl- (to die, to kill), possibly from Proto-Altaic *ŏli ("to die; to be hungry, exhausted"). Cognate with Chuvash vil- ("to die, to kill"), Gagauz jöl- ("to die, to kill"), Khalaj hil- ("to die, to kill" = preservation of word-initial Proto-Turkic *h in the Arghu dialect). Cognate with Evenki elbu, olbu-n, from Proto-Tungus-Manchu *(x)olbu- ("soul of the dead; shadow"), Mongolian ölüs- ("hungry"), from Proto-Mongolic *öl- ((to be) hungry).
