Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Slavic *zolto (Old Church Slavonic злато (zlato)), from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰel- (yellow; gleam; to shine), probably through a later root *ǵʰl̥-tó-m (gold). Cognate with Ukrainian золото (zoloto), Belarusian золата (zolata), Bulgarian злато (zlato), Serbian злато (zlato), Slovene zlato, Czech zlato, Slovak zlato, Polish złoto. The Indo-European root is also the source of Latvian zelts and Proto-Germanic *gulþą (whence English gold).
