From Old East Slavic съвѣтъ (sŭvětŭ), borrowed from Old Church Slavonic съвѣтъ (sŭvětŭ, advice), compounded from со- (so-) + вѣтъ (větŭ, agreement), from Proto-Slavic *větъ (council, talk). Probably cognate with Polish witać (to welcome).
