From Proto-Indo-European *sphel-, *phel- (to shine). Cognates include Sanskrit स्फुलिङ्ग (sphul-iṅga, spark of fire) and फल्गु (phalgú, red, reddish), Latvian spulgot (to shine), German flinkern (to shine), Latin splendeo (shine), etc. In compounds the word can be փաղ- (pʿał-) and փող- (pʿoł-).
