Usage notes

In modern English Sanskrit loanwords containing mahā are normally spelled as single words, or are spelled with hyphens decomposing the compound structure as is customary for Sanskrit compounds. The reason why mahā used to be spelled separately, and is still in some cases, is due to the fact that it's normally pronounced as a separate word in the compounds containing it, despite have no meaning on its own.
