Etymology[edit]

First recorded in early 20th century. Cognate with Latvian Aigars. Uncertain origin. Julius Mägiste (1936) suggests Finnish origin, but the name is unknown in Finland. Compare however dialectal Karelian aiga (time); the corresponding Northern Sami word is an element in ancient personal names such as Áigesárri.
