Uncertain origin, probably Germanic: al-, from Proto-Germanic *allaz (all), and -ōd-, from Proto-Germanic *audaz (wealth)[1] or ali-, from Proto-Germanic *aljaz (other), and -ōd-, from Proto-Germanic *audaz (wealth)[2]. Cognates include French Élodie and Alodie.
