Etymology[edit]

From the Latin annō Hegirae (in the year of the Hijra) from the word annō (in the year) the ablative of annus (year) + Hegirae (of the Hijra) the genitive of Hegira (the Hijra). Formed in imitation of the Christian Anno Domini.
