From Proto-Germanic *blēwaz (blue, gray), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰlē-wo- (yellow, grey, blue), from *bʰel- (to shine). Cognate with Old Saxon blāo, Old High German blāo (dark, gray), Old English blāw.
