From Proto-Germanic *fliukkijō, *fleugika, related to *fleuganą (to fly), from Proto-Indo-European *pleuk-, extended form of *pleu- (to flow). Cognate with Old Saxon fliuca (Middle Low German fliecke (long arrow)), Old High German flugga (arrow).
