From Proto-Germanic *grabaną, from Proto-Indo-European *gʰrobʰ-, o-grade form of *gʰrebʰ- (to dig, scratch, bury). Cognate with Old Saxon graƀan, Old High German graban (to dig, carve, chisel), Old English grafan.
