From Proto-Germanic *hallō, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱolnó-, *ḱelnó- (room), from Proto-Indo-European *ḱol-, *ḱel- (to hide, cover, conceal, protect). Cognate with Old Saxon halla, Old High German halla, Old English heall.
