From Proto-Germanic *hatjaną (to hunt down, persecute, pursue, attack, hate), from Proto-Indo-European *ḱādos, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱeh₂d- (strong emotion) + *-os. Cognate with Old High German hezzen, Old Saxon hettian, Old English hettan.
