From Proto-Germanic *helmaz, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱelmos (covering, concealer, protector), form Proto-Indo-European *ḱel- (to cover, hide, protect) + *-mos. Cognate with Old Saxon helm, Old High German helm (helmet), Old English helm (helmet, summit, protector).
