Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Germanic *wrakjô (an exile, warrior), from Proto-Indo-European *wr̥ǵyo- (to work), from zero-grade form of Proto-Indo-European *werǵ- (to do, make) + *-yo-. Cognate with Old Saxon wrekkio, Old High German wreccho, reccho (adventurer), Old English wrecca (an exile).
