Appendix:Na'vi
NOTE: The dictionary at Wikibooks is more complete and up-to-date than the list here, and excludes words which have not been confirmed, several of which are spurious.
Na’vi is the constructed language of the Na’vi, the indigenous race of the fictional moon Pandora in the 2009 film Avatar. It was created by Paul Frommer, a professor at the Marshall School of Business with a doctorate in linguistics. Na’vi was designed to fit director James Cameron's intention for the film and to be pronounceable by the actors, but to not closely recall any single human language. As of 2009, it had a vocabulary of a thousand words. Some of these are shown here.
Ä, ì, rr, ll, ng (= g), ts (= c), kx, px, tx are alphabetized as distinct letters from a, i, r, l, n, t, k, p. Frommer's preferred orthography, with g for ng and c for ts, is included in parentheses where it differs from the orthography of the movie scripts. Where the location of the stress is known, it is indicated in the IPA transcription. “Short plurals” are included where they occur.
Most of the words are taken from the appendix of Avatar: A Confidential Report on the Biological and Social History of Pandora (the "Survival Guide"). Some errors have been corrected, such as “neu” for new. However, it would appear that stress placement is often wrong; there are also additional words, mostly plant and animal names, elsewhere in this book, and some of these, such as iveh k’nivi s’dir “baby carrier/sling” and nikt’chey “food wrap“, are not possible Na’vi words.
For each word, the most reliable source is given. The sources are, from least to most reliable: [SG text] Avatar: A Confidential Report on the Biological and Social History of Pandora (the Survival Guide), main text; [AG] James Cameron's Avatar: The Game; [SG] Survival Guide, appendix; [AF] Avatar (the film); [FE] e-mail correspondence with Dr. Paul Frommer; [FM] public message from Dr. Paul Frommer.
