Etymology[edit]

Unknown. Likely from earlier *šülkeš and often compared with Proto-Germanic *selhaz (seal), as a loan in either direction or from a common third, perhaps substrate, source. According to Nirvi (1944), from *hülgäit'äk +‎ *-ëh.
