Proto-Germanic [edit]

From Proto-Indo-European *oywos (“law, custom”), from Proto-Indo-European *h₁ey- (“to go”). Cognate with Sanskrit (éva, “way, course; demeanor, conduct, habit”).
Alternative etymology derives from an earlier *aigwaz, possibly related to Latin aequus (“equal, just, fair”).
