Etymology[edit]

A Proto-Indo-European *ams- (blackbird) has been proposed. Related to Latin merula, whence the Dutch word merel. Also related to Proto-Celtic *mesalkā, whence Welsh mwyalch, Breton moualch, Cornish moelh, Irish smól.
