Exact origin unclear. Possibly from Proto-Indo-European *bʰōw- (to inflate, swell); or from earlier *bōhsmaz ("the space between the arms"; compare *faþmaz), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰāǵʰus (arm), related to Proto-Germanic *bōguz (upper arm, shoulder).
