From Proto-Indo-European *perg- (board, beam, post). Cognate with Lithuanian pérgas (boat made from a tree-hollow, dugout, canoe), Russian поро́г (porog, threshold, doorstep, sill), Latin pergula (veranda, balcony, projection).
